2024's Top 5 Yachting Trends According to IYC's Sales Experts

2024's Top 5 Yachting Trends According to IYC's Sales Experts

As we near the start of a new year, we take time to reflect on the latest trends and changing landscape. To help keep your finger on the pulse, we turned to the industry's leading Sales Consultants to uncover the top 5 features for 2024. From cutting-edge technology to eco-conscious considerations, these features are not only captivating discerning buyers but are also founding perspectives for charterers.

Whether 2024 is the year you decide to purchase your first yacht or if you are already an experienced owner, we hope the insights shared below will help you understand the state of the market and make more informed decisions.

Volume and Space

While traditionally one might expect an emphasis to be placed on sleek lines, cutting-edge speeds, and agile maneuverability, for many, increased volume and space have taken over. The allure of spacious interiors, high ceilings, and family-friendly layouts is redefining the very essence of luxury at sea.

Not merely a shift in aesthetics, the demand for this particular feature perhaps reflects a broader cultural change. As yachting becomes increasingly synonymous with family retreats and multi-generational vacations, the demand for expansive interiors and ample headroom is on the rise. Discerning buyers are seeking vessels that not only cater to the thrill of the open sea but also provide a comfortable and spacious platform for family bonding. For many buyers, the true measure of luxury lies in the freedom to explore, unwind, and create cherished moments in a voluminous and inviting space.

Advancements in yacht technology are responding to this growing trend. Smart and efficient use of space allows for larger living areas without compromising on performance. Innovations in propulsion systems and hull design ensure that spacious interiors do not offset navigation, offering a harmonious balance between comfort and performance.

This trend should also be taken into consideration for those interested in making their yacht also available for charter. Charterers are increasingly seeking vessels that provide a home-like ambiance on the water, making extended voyages more appealing and comfortable.

Long Range and Low Consumption

A significant tide is turning towards a new era of exploration and efficiency. Many yacht buyers are increasingly setting their sights on a combination of two key attributes: extended range and fuel efficiency.

Explorer yachts, once niche, are now at the forefront of yachting trends. “The desire to be in congested ports is becoming less appealing, with an increased appetite for remote destinations, sea-worthiness, and autonomy, impacting the client's needs and expectations of the yacht's capabilities. This has led to an all-time high of explorer yachts in-build and on order,” says Matthew Stone, IYC Sales Consultant and Managing Partner California

With environmental consciousness at the forefront of global conversations, yacht owners are not only looking to extend their journeys but also to do so with minimal ecological impact. “Rising fuel costs and recent high-profile ‘eco incidents’ reported in the media,” shares Michel Chryssicopoulos, IYC Global Managing Partner, “have heightened awareness about the environmental footprint of luxury travel. Expedition yachts, with their advanced propulsion systems and energy-efficient technologies, are well-positioned to allow owners to indulge their wanderlust while minimizing their carbon footprint.”

Economic considerations of those looking to maximize the utility of their yachting investment, the ability to travel farther on a tank of fuel not only enhances the yachting experience but also stretches the economic value of each voyage.

To read more about this growing trend, read our full feature on explorer yachts and the work our partner, Cantiere delle Marche, are doing.

Wellness & Fitness Facilities

“As clients increasingly view yachting as a lifestyle choice, the integration of wellness and fitness facilities becomes a compelling and necessary addition to superyachts,” says Richard Gray, IYC Head of Sales UK. These additions offer a dedicated space for physical activity, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Fitness centers equipped with state-of-the-art exercise equipment cater to guests who prioritize maintaining their health and fitness routines while at sea.

Wellness spaces, such as spa facilities, meditation rooms, and yoga decks, provide a holistic approach to overall well-being. Regular access to fitness facilities supports physical health, while spa and relaxation spaces contribute to mental well-being. Such considerations align with a contemporary understanding that true luxury is in the investment made in one's own health, making wellness facilities on superyachts a vital component in the pursuit of a fulfilling and balanced lifestyle.

In addition, the incorporation of features such as juice bars, cold and hot rooms, and more highlight the commitment to comprehensive well-being. “Cold plunges and contra-flow swimming pools are also proving to be desired indulgences on board,” says D.J. Kiernan, IYC US Commercial Director. These wellness approaches represent a departure from conventional deck designs, transforming the yacht into a sanctuary that promotes health, relaxation, and balance in a way that exceeds the accustomed options on superyachts.

AV/IT

Staying connected is no longer a luxury but a necessity. With the rise of new satellite internet providers, it is indeed becoming more and more important for owners to be as well connected as possible for both work and leisure. As such, TV, HI-FI, Wi-FI in all areas including external areas are becoming as important as technical design features.

Starlink, with its constellation of low Earth orbit satellites, stands out as a necessary luxury on board. Starlink's global coverage and cutting-edge technology ensure seamless communication, entertainment, and work capabilities. With reduced signal travel time, and its potential to offer more consistent connectivity in challenging environments, Starlink promises high-speed, low-latency internet access even in the most remote corners of the ocean.

Manufacturer Reputation

“In a world where the number of new build construction shipyards is increasing year on year, clients are looking for their yachts to have distinguished features and a sense of respect within the industry,” says IYC Sales Consultant, Jamie Swaine. Discerning clients continue to set their sights on vessels delivered by major Northern European shipyards, with a secondary nod towards esteemed Italian builders when budget considerations come into play. This strategic inclination isn't merely a matter of prestige; it's a calculated move driven by the desire to safeguard and potentially enhance the retained value of these vessels.

Yachts with Dutch and German pedigree have long held a revered status. The commitment to precision, innovation, and unparalleled craftsmanship these yards promise contributes significantly to their enduring allure. As yachts age gracefully, the continued respect for the meticulous build quality synonymous with Northern European shipyards serves as a hallmark, maintaining and, in some cases, even appreciating the vessel's intrinsic value over time.

Some clients turn their attention to major Italian builds who offer an appeal for budgets that don’t stretch as far, without compromising on elegance and functionality. While potentially more accessible in terms of cost, Italian-built yachts still carry the legacy of fine craftsmanship and a commitment to quality that resonates with those who seek a balance between value and prestige.

Amidst these established maritime giants, a rising star emerges —Turkish shipyards. The increasing prominence of Turkish builders is the result of a deliberate pursuit of excellence in design, engineering, and construction. As Turkish shipyards continue to invest in state-of-the-art facilities and attract top-tier talent, their yachts gain recognition for their quality, innovation, and competitive pricing.

Ingredifind - 90 Days In - How Are Your New Year's Resolutions Going?

Was January the month that you set New Year’s resolutions by starting a new diet or thinking about change? The first few months of the year are often a time when you look at your health and wellbeing and set out to make changes.

But 90 days in have you stuck to your goals? Rather than setting yourself something that may be difficult for you to achieve, try looking at more realistic goals to help you feel better about yourself.

Try the SMART approach — Small, Manageable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely.

Diet

· Instead of starting a new “fad” diet — simply make your diet healthier by adding more fruit, vegetables, fish, lean meats and plant based foods to your weekly menu

· Cut down on your sugary food and drink. Too much sugar in your diet can not only lead to weight gain, but also affects the way your pancreas produces insulin, increasing your risk of Type 2 Diabetes

· Use your freezer as your friend and cook more than you usually do. You can then portion these into containers, and you are ready to have a healthy meal in minutes when you don’t really want to cook

· Try making delicious and tasty vegetable soups. You can add any left over vegetables, beans, lentils, spinach, watercress, onion and garlic for a dish packed with essential nutrients

· Instead of eating your fruit cold — why not slice and warm it up. Good choices are apples, fresh/frozen berries, pineapple or orange. These can easily be frozen so you have them to hand

· Try swapping one of your snacks high in far, sugar and salt to a healthier option. By simply swapping 1 or 2 sugary snacks can really make a difference to a healthier you

· Keep your body hydrated and drink more water. Your body is mostly made up of water — nearly two thirds — so it’s important to aim for 6 to 8 glasses a day. Try having a glass of water, instead of a fizzy drink or coffee for example. Add fresh fruit to your water to change the flavour. Hydration is needed for your heart and circulation, digestion, for temperature control and for our brain to work well

Exercise

· Go outdoors as much as you can during daylight hours and embrace nature. A short walk or cycle ride is not only good for your body, but exercise helps to release endorphins and contributes towards a better mood and wellbeing

· If you are unable to go outdoors then make sure you have plenty of indoor plants. They not only look nice, but research has found that a friendly bacteria in plant soil (Mycobaterium Vaccae) triggers the release of serotonin, that can help alleviate symptoms of low mood and depression

· Variety is important, so take up a new hobby that you really enjoy — you are more likely to stick to it if it’s something that makes you happy

Remember you have a whole new year to make changes, so treat your New Year as a marathon — rather than a sprint.

Blevins Franks Financial Tips - The Cost of Living Longer

The Cost of Living Longer

By Rob Kay, Senior Partner, Blevins Franks

By making the lifestyle choice to retire in France, you will want to make the most of what the country has to offer, hopefully well into the future.

This may be longer than you expect. Thanks to medical advances over the years and a better quality of life, people are generally living longer than the previous generation. French statistics show that life expectancy for males currently aged 65 is 84, while for women it’s higher at 88. Of course, these are just averages, many of us will live longer, maybe much longer– it has become more common to hear of people reaching their 100th birthday.

Living to a ripe old age does sound rather appealing, provided we are healthy enough. Much more time to watch our grandchildren grow up and much more time to enjoy our well-earned retirement in France. There are, however, implications at both personal and government levels, with the key issue being: can we afford it?

The longer we live, the longer we need our savings to last in order to live as comfortably as we are used to. For peace of mind, assess whether your resources are on track to last throughout your lifetime.  Here are the key considerations.

Income and inflation

Starting with the big topic of the moment – inflation. We are getting used to headlines about rising inflation and the levels we have seen this year are certainly an eye-opener on how it can impact our monthly living costs.  But even though inflation will hopefully start to come down before too long, even low levels, compounded year after year, will reduce how far a fixed income will stretch in the future.

Say, for example, you spend €5,000 a month. Assuming an inflation rate of 3% a year, in 10 years’ time you could need €6,720 a month to maintain the same spending, and €9,030 in 20 years. So your capital and income would need to grow by the same amount to maintain the same standard of living.

Making your savings and investments last

Many retirees favour low-risk, ‘safer’ investments like bank deposits in their later years. But with potentially 30 years or more to fund in retirement, this can actually be a risky strategy.

British expatriates also need to factor in exchange rate risk. If you receive income in pounds while spending euros in your daily life, depending on currency movements you may find your money does not go as far as it once did, even without the inflation factor.

By following some key investment principles and taking specialist guidance, you can invest capital to give it the opportunity to keep pace with inflation, while keeping risk to a comfortable level.  Start by establishing your risk profile then carefully build a well-diversified investment portfolio to suit your circumstances, needs and objectives.   Look for investment arrangements which provide some currency flexibility to try and avoid the exchange rate risk.

You could get currency flexibility through some ‘assurance-vie’ policies, a specialised form of life assurance that allows French residents to hold a range of investments in a highly tax-efficient package. There are many different assurance-vie options based in various jurisdictions, not just France, and not all offer currency flexibility, so choose carefully.

A taxing problem – not just for governments

Rising life expectancy is also expensive for governments. The higher the proportion of older people in a population, the greater the costs of services like state pensions and healthcare – and the lower the number of taxpayers that can fund it. The solution usually lies in pension or healthcare reforms and tax increases to finance these escalating expenses.  The issue has been exacerbated over recent years with the amount of money governments have had to spend as a result of covid.

Higher taxation can be a considerable threat to your financial security in retirement.  Just like inflation it erodes your income, and in France we have social charges on top of income tax, giving us quite a high tax burden.   This is where personalised tax planning is vital to make use of available opportunities – in France, the UK, or elsewhere – to ensure you do not pay more tax than necessary.

With many of these arrangements you can combine your tax and investment planning in one exercise, allowing you to tackle the twin threats of tax and inflation at the same time.

Getting the most from your pensions

Pensions are often the key to financial security in retirement, so take care to do what is right for you.   You need to consider all your options, carefully weighing the pros and cons. Look at your income needs, investment options and risk, currency risk, what happens to the balance when you die and the tax implications.

There may be ways for expatriates to make pension funds go further, but before making any decisions, take regulated advice to avoid pension scams and establish the best approach for your particular objectives and circumstances.  You may be best advised to leave your pension where it is.

Leaving wealth behind

If you want to leave a lasting legacy for your family, you have to make sure you do not spend it all in your own lifetime – without compromising your quality of life today.  A strategic financial planning approach – that considers estate planning alongside investing and tax planning – can prove invaluable here.

Estate planning in France is complex, with succession tax based on the beneficiary and succession law imposing forced heirship.  If your family includes children from previous marriages, be particularly careful to ensure everyone benefits as you wish them to.

Whatever your stage of life, good financial planning can help you afford the lifestyle you want, for as long as you need, so you can focus on enjoying your retirement in France.

My work is a synthesis of several painting metaphors, from conceptual art and expressionism to pop art, all delivered in a sense of mockery and irony and an invitation to critical discourse.

Although they may seem naïve at first sight, I think there is a strong underlying political dimension in my pictures. I use a variety of expressive media, from painting, sculpture and photography to large scale installations. Art and especially image have their own rules: they go beyond paint, brushes and paper, over to constitute a narrative. Psychoanalysis is not sufficient by itself to interpret an image. A piece of art provokes aphorisms and coincidences. It may not be in itself a cause for war, but it will always be a mirror. One of the principles in my work is the synthesis of non-matching materials, data and the completion of an unequivocal picture. Another personal obsession has to do with confusion: sometimes when the narrative is tiring to my viewer, I juxtapose a tangled mess in order to stop thinking and start seeing!.

I would like my work to form a new field of thinking where all contradictions are resolved and a new type of harmony governs boththe visual and the logic!”

With Summer Nearly in Full Swing - Enjoy the Beach with our New Corporate Partner Unna Wood - Designed and Crafted in Portugal

UNNA WOOD - DESIGNED AND CRAFTED IN PORTUGAL

UNNA Wood was created by two best friends.
Friendship is what got us started. Friendship is what keeps us going.

We are creating products to unite people, to make them interact and create lasting memories. Strengthening bonds has, from the beginning, been the driving force behind our products that you see today.

Our name, UNNA Wood, represents three different yet synergetic concepts.

The first one is that every bat is unique. Each one is carefully handcrafted, here, in Portugal, from carefully selected pieces of wood. Since every piece has its own colour and texture, every bat is different.

The second one is that we create bats by uniting pieces of wood together. Because we developed a robust handmade resin and a high-end varnish to fully protect our bats, this bond, once created, can never be broken. It is stronger than the wood itself, which bring us to our third and last concept.

Like the bonds in wood in each bat, we believe that our UNNA Wood bats will unite people. For this reason we have created different bats covering different playing styles: power, balance and control. It is the perfect analogy and we did not even look for it. It just made sense at our time and it still does.

Pure friendships are just like the bond in the wood: strong and everlasting.

We truly believe that our UNNA Wood bats will contribute to the growth and strengthening of present and future friendships.
This is us. This is UNNA Wood.

With UNNA Wood, Stick Together.

A Unique & Unified Auction of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti - The World’s Most Collectible Wines - Featured by Zachys New York

Friday 7th May 2021 - New York
View the pdf catalogue

Domaine de la Romanée-Conti produces what few would dispute are the world’s most collectible wines!

Its pre-eminence is such that the cognoscenti refer to it simply as “The Domaine”. If you’re just getting into Burgundy, the reverence may seem a bit much, but a look at their vineyard holdings makes their supremacy a bit more understandable.

The jewel in the crown is the vineyard of Romanée-Conti itself. This site, initially called the Clos des Croux, was originally owned by the Benedictine monks of the abbey of Saint- Vivant de Vergy. The monks had received the vineyards from the Duchess of Burgundy Alix de Vergy in 1232. The property was sold by the monks in 1584 and renamed La Romanée in the 17th Century. The vineyard passed through several owners before being purchased by Louis-François de Bourbon in 1760. His status as the cousin of King Louis XV afforded him the title of Prince de Conti, giving rise to the current name of the vineyard.

After the Revolution, Romanée-Conti was sold to raise money for the fledgling Republic, and ended up in the hands of Jules Ouvrard, the son of Napoléon’s banker. Upon his death, the heirs sold the vineyard to Jacques-Marie Duvault-Blochet, the ancestor of the de Villaine family, who still own the domaine, in partnership with the Leroy family. In 1911 Edmond Gaudin de Villaine purchased the winery which had originally belonged to the monks of the abbey. He moved the winemaking from Santenay, where Duvault-Blochet had been based, to Vosne-Romanée, near the vineyards, and gave the new winery its cur- rent name.

Duvault-Blochet amassed impressive vineyard holdings during his lifetime, including prime parcels in Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Richebourg, Echézeaux, and Grands-Echézeaux, as well as a plot called Les Gaudichots. Gaudichots adjoined a vineyard called La Tâche, which was owned by Count Liger-Belair. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti often sold Gaudichots under the name of La Tâche, much to the irritation of Liger-Belair, who unsuccessfully sued them.

At the death of the Comtesse Liger-Belair in 1931, La Tâche was sold to the Domaine, and the entire site of more than six hectares was then known as La Tâche. Romanée-Conti and La Tâche are both wholly-owned by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, and are thus referred to in French as “monopoles”. These are the two most desirable wines from DRC, although the Richebourg, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, Echézeaux, and Grands-Echézeaux are all made in the same way.

All of the vineyards are farmed according to biodynamic principals, and yields are kept very low. The hand-picked bunches are fermented whole in open-top wooden fermenters before being aged for approximately a year and a half in new casks. In addition to the parcels that they own, DRC leases (since 2009) just over two hectares of Corton from the heirs of the Prince de Mérode family.

While red wines form the bulk of the production at DRC, it would be a mistake to overlook the Montrachet. This white wine is produced from 0.67 hectares of vines in Chassagne- Montrachet. The result is rich and lush, with a luxurious heft on the palate almost recall- ing the density of their red wines. The Domaine is about to move further into white wine production, since they have recently leased 2.8 hectares of vineyards from Bonneau du Martray and will begin to produce Corton-Charlemagne with the 2019 vintage. In total, they own just over 25.5 hectares of vines and lease another five hectares in Corton, and every drop is a wine lover’s dream.

What does all of this history mean for you, the collector? A bottle of DRC is a vinous experience like no other. At Zachys, we often get asked if the wine can justify its price tag. For collectors of DRC, or for those who have tasted it, the answer is almost always yes. For those for whom the wine is a bit more aspirational, a combination of the wine itself, and the history to which you are connected when you pop a cork, is a joint-experience rare in the wine world.
