Platinum Partner SAFIRO Steals Headlines with a Masterclass in Monochrome Magic at Royal Ascot

SAFIRO's Founder Yulia Shirokova and her guest Michelle Gay wowed the cameras on the second day of Royal Ascot. Yulia's outfit comprising her signature Safiro two-piece Azore Citrine skirt and a golden Jade Pearl top was hailed by one journalist as a Masterclass in Monochrome Magic.

"I have always loved the atmosphere of Royal Ascot, and it was such an honour to share the same pages as The Duchess of Wessex and Lauren Silverman. We were thrilled at the reaction to our outfits, and it was great seeing so much glamour on such a glorious day," said Yulia.

Not to be outdone, Yulia's guest, Michelle Gay, also won praise and lens time from reporters for her SAFIRO Crystal Flower dress.

In addition to making the dailies, including spreads in the Daily Express, the Daily Mail, Metro and Forbes, Yulia and Michelle were spotted by Ascot TV and featured in the final round-up of the day. Michelle gave an interview about her outfit and the day itself.

Michelle gave an interview about her outfit and the day itself.

Yulia and Michelle complimented their SAFIRO outfits with hats by Milliner-to-the-stars Victoria Grant and jewellery from Albemarle and Aloria collections from the legendary House of Garrard, which was established in 1722. Perhaps the unique marriage of contemporary styling with traditional craftsmanship helped create their striking and elegant summer looks which turned heads and lenses alike.

Iconic Celebrity Hotspot and Luxurious Beach Club Villa Garoupe on Cap Antibes is Now For Sale

La Garoupe, a former Cote d’Azur beach club favoured by the world’s elite, is now for sale with Cap Villas Agency for €10.5m. The property is expected to attract a lot of attention thanks to its unique history, with guests over the years including Winston Churchill, Pablo Picasso, Sean Connery, former U.S. president Harry Truman, the Duke of Windsor, the Prince of Wales, Alain Delon, Ernest Hemingway, and many other esteemed individuals. Until the sale is concluded, Villa Garoupe is also available for rent.

Cap d’Antibes is where the Cote d’Azur’s fame began, and this was in part thanks to La Garoupe. Opening to the public as a beach snack bar in the early 20th century, La Garoupe slowly started to gain recognition and attract A-list guests.

Jeannine Giotti’s family owned the land and the snack bar was her idea, with Giotti playing its charismatic host and becoming affectionately known as ‘The Empress of La Garoupe’. La Garoupe’s reputation was also helped by wealthy American ex-pats Gerald and Sara Murphy, who created a vibrant social circle of elite creatives on the French Riviera, many of whom frequented La Garoupe.

From the onset of WW1 and well into the 20th century, La Garoupe was an iconic location on the French Riviera. Many celebrities visited and Édith Piaf even hosted her engagement party here.

The current owners acquired the property in 1999 from Giotti, finding their own ‘personal slice of paradise’ at Garoupe beach. The property continued as an exclusive restaurant until 2007, when it was renovated and converted into the unique residential villa it is today. Having enjoyed this legendary property to the fullest, the owners believe it is time for Garoupe’s next chapter.

This beautiful villa is situated in one of the most luxurious corners of the French Riviera. Located on the only natural sand beach in Cap d’Antibesand overlooking a full panorama of the glorious sea and mountains, nearby you will find many amenities, including excellent restaurants and even luxurious palaces.

This villa is unlike any other in its construction and design, has kept much of its original layout from its days as a beach club, including the original beach cabins. The 150m2 interior is reminiscent of being aboard a yacht, featuring a kitchen and living area facing the sea, 4 bedrooms (one with independent access) and a small second level crawl space for children.

Outside there are several areas to lounge in the sun after dipping into the sea or pool. Villa Garoupe has access to a private beach and a pontoon sun deck 15 feet from the water. It is also accessible by yacht, via the 600-foot marina.

▪ Surface area: 850 m² (incl. 150 m² indoor)

"From the moment we entered Garoupe beach, we knew we had walked into something special. The property epitomises the romantic history of the French Riviera; the place to be for jet-setters before jets were invented! Located directly on the beach of Cap d'Antibes, this property offers guests a remarkable slice of history and panoramic views of the Mediterranean.”  Emilia Jedamska, Property Manager at Cap Villas

With Summer Nearly in Full Swing - Enjoy the Beach with our New Corporate Partner Unna Wood - Designed and Crafted in Portugal

UNNA WOOD - DESIGNED AND CRAFTED IN PORTUGAL

UNNA Wood was created by two best friends.
Friendship is what got us started. Friendship is what keeps us going.

We are creating products to unite people, to make them interact and create lasting memories. Strengthening bonds has, from the beginning, been the driving force behind our products that you see today.

Our name, UNNA Wood, represents three different yet synergetic concepts.

The first one is that every bat is unique. Each one is carefully handcrafted, here, in Portugal, from carefully selected pieces of wood. Since every piece has its own colour and texture, every bat is different.

The second one is that we create bats by uniting pieces of wood together. Because we developed a robust handmade resin and a high-end varnish to fully protect our bats, this bond, once created, can never be broken. It is stronger than the wood itself, which bring us to our third and last concept.

Like the bonds in wood in each bat, we believe that our UNNA Wood bats will unite people. For this reason we have created different bats covering different playing styles: power, balance and control. It is the perfect analogy and we did not even look for it. It just made sense at our time and it still does.

Pure friendships are just like the bond in the wood: strong and everlasting.

We truly believe that our UNNA Wood bats will contribute to the growth and strengthening of present and future friendships.
This is us. This is UNNA Wood.

With UNNA Wood, Stick Together.

Zachys Wine Auctions Hosts The Spring Auction - Fine & Rare Wines & Spirits Featuring The Mediterranean Collection

The Spring Auction: Fine & Rare Wines & Spirits featuring The Mediterranean Collection. June 18th 2021 at 10am BST (5am EST, 5pm HKT, 11am Paris)

Welcome to our fifth London auction! After the successes we had last year we followed things up with two “spirits only” auctions from our London sale room. But this is the first London wine sale of 2021, and our third-ever London wine auction. The Spring Auction

Download Auction Catalogue

If you’ve been following our colleagues in our Hong Kong and United States sale rooms you know how much great wine there is on the market right now. We’ve had our annual partnership with La Paulée, our first-ever Spirits-only auctions, and set hundreds of world records along the way. We are in the middle of an unbelievably busy June, with our partnership with Premiere Napa Valley, and the sales of wines from such collecting luminaries as George Caloyannidis and Tawfiq Khoury. I’m delighted to continue along this path of success with this sale.

Not only do we have wine from Pioneers, an offering now being sold on its third con- tinent, we have an amazing consignment from right here on the continent. Starting on lot 34, this is the same consignment sold earlier in the year as the “DRC Only” sale in New York (there’s additional wine here, not just DRC). Following this consignment is the heart of this auction, at lot 50. This consignment is all about the Burgundy, with easily the largest offering of DRC we have ever sold at Zachys Europe! There’s also Dugat-Py, Faiveley, Trapet, Mugnier, and many more.

Later in the auction is a wonderful group of Mascarello, which graces the cover of this catalog, and it wouldn’t be a London sale without an amazing offering of Chartreuse starting at lot 324.

This sale has something for everyone, for sure, so please get those bids in early to bid@zachys.com

UK Pension Benefits - the Lifetime Allowance Limits Explained by Blevins Franks - Wealth Management Advisors

Will your pensions get caught in the lifetime allowance trap?

By Rob Kay, Senior Partner, Blevins Franks

If you have several UK pensions, have been saving for many years or have a generous company pension, you could be at greater risk of 25% or 55% tax penalties following recent measures.

One key outcome of the 2021 UK Budget was that the pensions lifetime allowance (LTA) was frozen at its current level for at least the next five years. This measure alone is estimated to net the Treasury approximately £990 million by 2026, pushing an extra 10,000 people over the threshold. With LTA tax penalties as high as 55%, make sure you are not caught unprepared.

What is the lifetime allowance?

Since 2006, the UK government has capped how much you can hold in combined pension benefits without paying extra tax. Originally £1.5 million, the LTA peaked in 2011 at £1.8 million before gradually dropping to £1 million in 2016. Tracking inflation since then, the March 2021 Budget cancelled this year’s scheduled increase, freezing the LTA at its current level of £1,073,100 until at least 2026.

Who is affected by the LTA?

While the current lifetime allowance of £1,073,100 sounds high, it does not just capture the ultra-wealthy.

All UK pension benefits outside the State Pension are counted, including everything accumulated over a working lifetime. After decades of pension contributions, compounding interest, investment growth and tax relief, the limit may be closer than you think.

For ‘final salary’ (defined benefit) pension schemes, the usual measure of value is 20x the annual income due. Generally this will mean those with pensions worth £53,655+ a year would be affected today.

What are the LTA penalties?

Once total pension funds exceed the allowance limit, extra tax is payable whenever you access your money – technically called a ‘benefit crystallisation event’. How much you pay depends on the way funds are withdrawn – rates are 55% for lump sums and 25% for income or transfers to an overseas pension. So at best, the cost of being over can be a quarter of your funds, at worst: over half. Note that this is on top of any other tax payable.

Being non-UK resident offers no protection. Usually, under the double tax agreement, residents of France are not liable for UK taxes on British pensions (except government service pensions). However, for anyone over the allowance, these rules do not apply – the LTA tax is applied in the UK first and cannot be claimed back.

How can you check your LTA position?

Calculating how much of your allowance you have used is not always straightforward, especially for final salary pensions, so check your position with your provider or pension adviser.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) will first test your allowance status when you start drawing your pension, then every time you access funds and when you turn 75. If you die before 75, any lump sums paid to your beneficiaries will also be subject to the LTA test and subsequent tax penalties.

How can you protect your pensions?

While it is possible to obtain ‘protection’ from HMRC to secure a higher limit, be aware that strict conditions apply, so take guidance.

Expatriates have the option of transferring UK pension funds to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS). If you transfer one or more UK pensions into a QROPS and your total benefits are under £1.073 million, you will not face LTA taxes on the transfer. However, make sure the QROPS is within the European Economic Area (EEA), otherwise you would still lose 25% through the ‘overseas transfer charge’.

Once in a QROPS, funds are out of reach of LTA penalties, no matter how much you have or how you access it. A suitable QROPS can also provide tax-efficiency, currency flexibility and estate planning benefits.

An alternative option is to explore taking your UK pension as cash and reinvesting it into a tax-efficient French-compliant arrangement. Again, this can unlock other benefits not usually available with UK pensions.

Reviewing your options

Before making any major pension decisions, it is crucial to take regulated, personalised advice to avoid pension scams and determine the most suitable approach for you.

What if you are already over the limit? While you would trigger an immediate 25% LTA charge on a QROPS transfer, the funds become immune to further penalties. If you instead transferred to a UK scheme, like a Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP), you would not trigger immediate taxation but the funds would remain liable – with future charges increasing as funds grew. The 25% or 55% LTA penalties would then become payable whenever you take benefits and also apply to any heirs inheriting the pension.

If you are close to the threshold, consider acting sooner rather than later. Your pension funds should continue to grow while the lifetime allowance remains frozen, so you could potentially avoid unnecessary taxation by taking steps now.

Even if your pension benefits are within the allowance or you are not yet ready to access them, it is a good idea to review your situation. A regulated adviser with cross-border experience can help you explore your options and take advantage of tax-efficient opportunities to help secure a comfortable retirement in France.

Another Incredible Success - Monaco Hosts an Exceptional 2021 F1 Grand Prix as the Flying Dutchman Max Verstappen Takes Victory

The 2021 Monaco GP was an enthralling event, with this year’s edition living up to its hype and prestige. Charles Leclerc was supposed to start the race as he was the fastest driver in qualifying ahead of Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas in 2nd and 3rd respectively. However, due to a crash at the end of Saturday, which damaged his left driveshaft, he could not start the race. Another prominent driver who had a rather bad race was Mercedes’ Valterri Bottas, could not finish because of a wheel issue during a pit stop.

At the end, Verstappen emerged victorious in pole position, making him the leader of the driver’s standings for the first time in his career. Carlos Sainz drove home in second place, winning his first podium for Ferrari. Lando Norris of Mclaren finished 3rd in the beautiful special edition car used just for Monaco. Segio Perez and Sebastien Vettel were forth and fifth respectively, after a great race from both drivers. Vettel won his first points for his new team Aston Martin, while also winning the best driver of the day award.

About the Monaco Grand Prix

Monaco Grand Prix is one of the biggest races of the calendar year. It has a unique combination of history, prestige and excitement that only a few events have. In fact, Monaco GP, Indianapolis 500 and Le Mans 24 hours make up the Triple Crown of the most prestigious races in the world.  To go with that, it is also the only F1 race in the world to take place inside a city, using the normal roads instead of a specific track. Today we are going to have a look at what makes the Monaco GP so special.

The race itself predates the current F1 world championship; it was first organized in 1929 by the Automobile Club de Monaco under auspices of Prince Louis II. On April 14, William Grover-Williams won the first ever race while driving a Bugatti Type 35B.

The race quickly gained importance in the few years after it’s inception. However, from 1938 to 1947 it was not held due to demand for high appearance fees and later the second world war. Another notable cancellation was in 1949 due to the unfortunate death of the Prince.

Ever since 1950, the race has been officially included in the Formula One World Driver’s Championship, with F1 legend Fangio winning the first edition. During the 1960’s, British driver Graham Hill came to be known as “the king of Monaco” for winning 5 GP races held in the country. He was the most successful driver before the implementation of new Armco safety barriers on the track in the 1970’s. These barriers were put as a result of accidents like Alberto Ascari and Paul Hawkins, where the cars ended up in the harbor waters.

After Hill, there were very few other drivers who were very successful at the Monaco GP – the Brazilian Ayrton Senna has won the race a record 6 times. Michael Schumacher, along with Hill, have won it 5 times; while Alain Prost closely follows with 4 times. Current world champion Lewi Hamilton has won the race 3 times, along with Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart and Nico Rosberg. The most successful team at the race has been McLaren, with 15 wins. Ferrari and Mercedes are a bit behind with 10 and 8 wins respectively.

The Grand Prix circuit de Monaco, along with Monza in Italy is the only track to have had the same circuit ever since it’s inception. The track itself has a total length of about 3.3 kms, making it one of the shortest in the entire season. However, the elevation changes, tight corners and a narrow course makes it one of the most demanding ones in the history of the competition.

Without a doubt, the coming race would be one of the marquee motorsport events of 2021.

"Ken believes that an artist should be influenced by every single thing they've ever seen. In his own practice, he can pick out the obvious influences - Matisse, Bonnard, Picasso, van Gogh - obvious, in the sense that they are so ubiquitous; it would be hard not to be influenced by them.... Launch of the “Genoa Superyacht Hub” Project - Amico & Co and Pesto Sea Group Market Genoa as the Ideal Year-Round Home Port for Superyachts

Genoa strengthens its leadership with investments in infrastructures and urban transformation. A project to promote the area internationally, aiming to further boost the economy relating to super and mega yachts.

Already among the main destinations for super and megayachts in the Mediterranean where on average more than 70% of the global superyacht fleet cruises, Genoa has further strengthened its leadership by investing in urban transformation and new infrastructures for hosting and managing large yachts.

For this reason, Amico & Co, leader in Europe and amongst the top three in the world in the superyacht repair and refitting sector, together with Pesto Sea Group, a market leader offering superyacht incoming services, yacht agency services and bunkering, are launching “Genoa Superyacht Hub”.

The project was created with the desire of promoting the excellence of the companies’ combined incoming, assistance, technical and hospitality services, specifically targeting these towards the international superyacht community in a synergic and efficient way, as well as valorising the cultural and environmental characteristics and the quality of life that the Genoese territory, Liguria and Northern Italy in general have to offer.

Genoa Superyacht Hub has as its objective that of reaching, in an effective and targeted way, yacht Owners and Captains, yacht and charter managers, crew members and technical staff, responding to each of their specific requirements through a wide range of services and structures of excellence, each of which sustainable and perfectly integrated with city living. A territory that represents something quite unique in the world, with its combination of renowned tourist destinations, food and wine culture, outdoor sports and recreational activities, mild climate and strong synergy between the numerous companies specialised in all sorts of dedicated yacht services.

This promotional activity revolves around portal www.genoasuperyachthub.com which, as well as presenting the services of the yachting agency, refit shipyard, crew hospitality, bunkering, ship chandlery, provisioning and marina, narrates the experience of living the city and its’ surrounding area and is packed with insider tips and curiosities and constantly updated.

Genoa Superyacht Hub fully represents the synergy between the two companies. Thanks to this collaboration, completely new service packages and initiatives have been created, ever more structured and exclusive, entirely dedicated to sector operators. Particular attention is paid to the assistance given to captains and crew during their stay: from health assistance to financial advisory, for example explaining

how to open current accounts or access funding, sourcing professional training courses and organising dedicated events as well as providing information about what to do in town in order to live the dolce vita.

For technical managers, the project proposes webinars dedicated to refit management, as well as fiscal and customs updates, involving international experts; for charter managers continuous updates are provided on all of the most interesting and novel visitor and cultural experiences to be inserted into their charter itineraries.

All the information the hub produces is always available to the yachting community via dedicated social media channels: on Facebook, Instagram, Youtube and LinkedIn.

The launch of Genoa Superyacht Hub also coincides with the phase of full operativity of the new Waterfront Marina, a centre devoted to hospitality for large yachts, their crews and their Owners, created by Amico & Co by redeveloping part of the Darsena Nautica area at Genoa Port’s Eastern entrance.

A modern and innovative structure, that enhances and completes the selection available for those who want to choose Genoa as a home port for every season, perfectly integrated with Genoa Municipality’s Eastern Waterfront development, designed by the famous architect Renzo Piano. A major urban transformation intervention that will give hospitality to spaces and solutions designed to aggregate expertise and craftsmen from the yachting sector and the “blue economy”.

A Continuing Revival Of Modern Art In Monte Carlo As Hauser & Wirth Monaco Inaugurates An Exhibition By Louise Bourgeois

Founded in 1992 in Zurich, Switzerland as a small family-owned business between Iwan Wirth, Manuela Wirth and Ursula Hauser the art house ‘Hauser & Wirth’ collecting and exhibiting exceptional forms of Modern Art has expanded over the past 30 years by opening its on galleries in one of the most lavish and glamorous locations such as Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, New York and now the Principality of Monaco.

‘Hauser & Wirth’ house has built a reputation for its dedication to artists and support of visionary artistic projects worldwide. This 19th of June the Art house is delighted to announce its exceptional exhibition and private viewing space right at the glory heart of the Principality of Monaco – Monte-Carlo. The ‘Louise Bourgeois. Malade de l’Amour’ exhibition will include a monumental public sculpture from the French American artist’s Spider series, a bronze arachnid over three meters tall which will be placed in the beautiful gardens in front of the Casino de Monte-Carlo next to the gallery.

Located near the historic Hotel de Paris, the new gallery will feature a spectacular main exhibition space of 290 sq. m. cube with 9-meter-high walls, lit from above by a dramatic skylight. The conversion of the site has been conducted by Selldorf Architects, New York with whom ‘Hauser & Wirth’ house successfully collaborated for previous international exhibitions. In Monaco, the gallery will occupy the lower spaces of a building designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners and owned by Société de Bains de Mer.

‘Hauser & Wirth’ representatives share their thoughts towards the future exhibition as an exceptional opportunity to present their artists in the heart of a city like Monaco, engaging with the vibrant contemporary scene across the French Riviera, and strengthening their European presence.

The works part of the inaugural exhibition by Louise Bourgeois will span a period between 1947-2008. Along with Bourgeois monumental Spider sculpture dating from 1996, one of the artist’s most enduring and iconic motifs, two further aluminium sculptures are suspended inside the gallery and many more. Spectacular euphoria of emotions represented towards Bourgeois’ personal visual vocabulary will flourish at the heart of the Principality this summer season and it should not be missed!

Declaring Your Income Tax in France - Deadlines And General Advice From Our Corporate Partner Blevins Franks

Income tax return time in France 2021

By Rob Kay, Senior Partner, Blevins Franks

For those of you who were a resident of France in 2020, it is now time for the annual tax return for income and gains made during the calendar year 2020.

For those who arrived in France from the UK during last year, you will, in theory, be declaring your income and gains from your date of arrival in France until 31st December 2020.

You are taxed as a ‘household in France, so a married couple is taxed together, for instance.

In France, income tax declarations generally need to be submitted around the end of May/beginning of June, with the dates varying slightly each year.  The online portal for 2021 opened on 8th April and the submission dates have been published.

Deadlines dates for online and paper declarations

Everyone should now file their income tax return online, on the government portal  www.impots.gouv.fr, unless you have a genuine reason for not being able to do so.

The dates for online declarations vary according to which department you live in:

01-19
Midnight Wednesday 26 May

20-54
Midnight Tuesday 1 June

55-976
Midnight Tuesday 8 June

Non-residents
Midnight Wednesday 26 May

IIf you have no internet connection or struggle with online forms due to age or a disability, you can submit a paper return. Paper returns can be obtained from your local tax office or downloaded from the ‘impôts’ website, once available.

Moreover, for those of you who are submitting your first return, you may not have received the necessary codes to be able to set up your ‘personal space’ on the tax portal. You can go on the website www.impots.gouv.fr and on the ‘espace particulier’ page to get your login code and your tax number if you don’t have one. You can also contact your relevant ‘service des impots’ to obtain your tax number.  If you cannot make on online declaration, your first return will have to be in paper form.

The deadline for paper returns is earlier than online returns, on Thursday 20th May (for both residents and non-residents).  It is the date of the postmark on the envelope which is used to verify whether you have submitted on time! If you submitted an online return last year, you will no longer receive a paper one in the post.

The big difference this year is that a large number of taxpayers will not have to complete a declaration at all, unless their situation has changed since last year.

However, normally only those who only receive French salaries or pensions are exempted from completing a return. Anyone with income from abroad will almost certainly have to continue to file every year.

Income tax rates

Income tax is payable on earnings, pensions and rental income, and you are taxed as a household rather than an individual – the parts familiales system, which can prove beneficial.

Taxes are declared in arrears, so your 2021 return needs to report the income you earned last year. The tax rates for 2020 income are:

Up to €10,084 – 0%
€10,085 to €25,710 – 11%
€25,711to €73,516 – 30%
€72,517 to €158,122 – 41%
Over €158,122 – 45%

There is an additional 3% for a single person where income is between €250,000 and €500,000 per part (nothing is due from a family) and 4% for income exceeding €500,000 per part for an individual, reduced to 3% for a family (up to a limit).

Various deductions are available, so make sure you are using all the ones you are entitled to.

Tax on investment income – the Prélèvement Forfaitaire Unique (PFU)

Investment income, such as interest, dividends, capital gains and gains from life insurance policies/non-French assurance-vie, is currently taxed at a fixed rate of 30% rather than the scale rates of income tax.  This includes both tax and social charges, so it is beneficial for those with higher investment income.

Households in low-income brackets can opt for the progressive income tax rates (plus social charges) so they are not taxed more under this system.

Unless you are a low-income household, you need to declare interest or dividends received from abroad within 15 days of the month end and pay the 30% tax. This is then offset against the tax due on your tax return.

What you need to declare

French tax residents are liable to French income tax on their worldwide income and gains, so you need to declare all income you earn in the UK and anywhere else outside France, whether it is pension, rental or investment income.

You will not, however, pay tax twice on income that is taxable in the UK. Under the terms of the France-UK double taxation treaty, UK government service pension and rental income are only taxable in the UK. However this does not mean that you do not declare it in France – you must include it on your French tax return. You will then receive a credit equal to the French income tax and social charges.

Real estate gains are liable to tax in both countries, but you receive a credit in France for UK tax paid.   Gains made on the disposal of capital investments are generally taxed in the country where the seller is resident.

Remember that if you are resident in France you are also obliged to declare all your foreign bank accounts and non-French life insurance policies, even if you do not earn an income and/or they are dormant. This is done when you submit your annual tax return, using a separate form.  The penalties for failing to declare accounts were increased in 2018, so don’t forget about any old accounts.

Non-residents of France need to submit a tax return listing all income earned in France (eg, rental income).

Social charges

Social charges are paid on top of income tax, and for 2020 income generally range from 9.1% to 17.2% depending on the type of income.

They are usually calculated based on the income declared in your income tax return and the authorities will send notification of the amount payable in the autumn, along with your income tax assessment.

Exchange rate

When converting your regular Sterling 2020 income (such as pensions for instance) to Euros for your tax return, you can use the rate from the Banque de France, which is £1 = €1.125.

Vivanova People - An Introduction To Pierre-Louis Renou - General Manager of the Fairmont Monte Carlo & Regional Vice President

With a penchant for chilled Champagne married with roast chicken, French fries and a glass or two of Volnay, we get to know Pierre-Louis Renou - General Manager of the Fairmont Monte Carlo & Regional Vice President - a gentleman and a leader in the international hospitality industry.

In the first of our Vivanova People interviews, where we learn more about our partner brands and successes, Pierre-Louis Renou hosts questions concerning the life behind and the work involved in leading one of Monaco’s finest hotel establishments - one of Club Vivanova’s favourite event locations and where we will host our 7th Edition Luxury Lifestyle Gala on Saturday 13th November 2021.

The Fairmont Monte Carlo is the Riviera’s largest hotel, boasting 602 guest rooms, suites and residences and an array of dining locations including NOBU, the Saphir 24 Lounge and Bistro, rooftop dining at the Horizon Deck and Champagne Bar and Nikki Beach, in-room dining, Private Dining servicing external events including the Monte Carlo Rolex Tennis, two magnificent ballrooms and 18 meeting rooms, with a fitness centre and the Carol Joy Spa!

You are a leader in the global hotel industry, what can you suggest for a young person who wants to develop in the hospitality business, what are the most important personal requirements that are needed to succeed?
Succeeding in this industry requires to have “it” in you. This sense of curiosity that drives you to always find out more about your environment, the people and the culture around you is key. It makes you and your work authentic which is, to me, the roots of a successful career.

How do you think that the luxury hotel industry has changed overall during the last ten years (including the recent COVID19 crisis)?
We have obviously noticed the increase of the sustainability awareness but also a huge work has been done to go further in the personalization of the service. This says a lot about our society. People are in need to return to the basis of real life. Even though the digitalization has helped easing a lot of processes, guests want to connect with the team of the hotel and the locals of the destination. They want to be recognized when they show loyalty. The COVID-19 crisis emphasized those same exact needs of authenticity and people will become even more respectful of everything they are surrounded by. This is what Fairmont is aiming for.

In which ways do you motivate and facilitate your team to perform well and maintain the high standards required in such a luxurious and glamorous location?
The environment has to be itself motivating. We are grateful to work in a naturally beautiful and glamorous destination so of course it helps but it does not make all the work. The team is motivated if the atmosphere feels great and the values of the brand resonate with them. Then and only then, they can develop this sense of pride and of belonging that makes them strive to excellence.

If you had an open menu choice, could you let the readers know what is your favourite dish and which wine you would enjoy with that dish?
I really like a simple yet flavorful menu. A crispy fresh bottle a champagne to start, then a delicious roast chicken with French fries to end with a traditional tarte aux fraises. Let’s not forget a glass a Volnay (or two !)

What has been the most fulfilling moment of your career?
It is in fact hard to choose just one moment among all the others but if I had to pick the most striking one I would probably say the visit of the Oval office when I arrived in Washington DC after Barack Obama election in 2009.

Lastly, what drives you to succeed?
Simply people. I am surrounded by amazing people and my pleasure to wake up every day has always been to take care of my family, my guests, my team.

F1 Driver Charles Leclerc Gifts His Victorious Ferrari Race Car SF90 To HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco

April 2021 marked a ‘mini-homecoming’ for the Monegasque F1 driver Charles Leclerc, as the racer gifted his iconic Ferrari single seater F1 race car SF90 to HSH Prince Albert. This car was driven by Leclerc during his victories at the Belgian GP and the Italian GP in the 2019 season, a feat the entire Principality is proud of.

At the Belgian Grand Prix, started the race in pole position, and continued his dominance throughout the race, finishing first. Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas finished behind in second and third position respectively. Leclerc’s teammate, Sebastian Vettel, just missed out on the podium, as he finished at a more than respectable 4th position.

Similarly, at the Italian Grand Prix, Leclerc started at pole position and finished at the same. Hamilton and Bottas switched positions however, with the latter finishing second this time. Vettel however, managed to finish at a mediocre 13th place, especially since Ferrari is considered to be one of the best teams in the game.

Considered by many as one of the best drivers on the grid, Leclerc was gifted the car by the Scuderia Ferrari team; and as a tribute to the place he grew up in, he then decided to pass on the present to the sovereign. The SF90 adds to the Prince’s personal car collection, or the Monaco Top Car Collection as it is so often called. The collection already includes a Porsche 928, 1986 Lamborghini Countach, 1942 Ford GPW among others, which have been collected over a period of more than 30 years.

Speaking about the car, Prince Albert said –
“It’s wonderful! I thank Charles very much for having made this gesture to us and it is true that it has its place here. It fits perfectly into the logic of the Collection, which is to present old and modern vehicles, which trace the history of the automobile and motor racing.”

The collection currently sits at the terrace of the Fontvielle Centre Commercial; and is currently closed to the public due to the Pandemic. However, when it does re-open, it will surely create a certain buzz.

Metabolic Balance Presents Weekly Recipes with Ingredients That Are Going To Make You Feel Amazing - Part 2 Arugula

Whether in pesto, as a salad or on a pizza – arugula is not only very popular, but also absolutely healthy. The dark green leaf salad with the spicy flavor is rich in vitamin C and thus supports the immune system. In addition, arugula contains folic acid, other B vitamins, plenty of beta-carotene as well as potassium, iron, magnesium and calcium. Its bitter substances also ensure a healthy metabolism. Due to their intense taste, the bitter substances are responsible for the rapid onset of salivary and digestive juices. The feeling of satiety is thus accelerated and we feel full faster. Arugula thus also prevents cravings and becomes a multi-talent on the plate.

This tasty side dish exudes a touch of exoticism: arugula salad with olive mango dressing.

You need:
1 serving of vegetables (for example olives and arugula)
1 tablespoon of chopped shallots
1 serving of mango
balsamic vinegar
salt, black pepper

Preparation:
Pureé the olives with balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper. Peel the mango, remove the pulp from the core and cut into small cubes. Purée some of the cubes under the dressing, set aside the rest. Mix the onion cubes with the dressing. Wash, clean and dry arugula. Mix with the mango cubes and the dressing. Enjoy a protein according to plan – a fish fillet or fried tofu goes well. Yummy!

Strawberry-arugula salad with anglerfish
1 serving of anglerfish medallions
1 serving of arugula
1 tablespoon of chopped onion
1 serving of strawberries
1 tablespoon of balsamic vinegar
salt, black pepper
some oil

Preparation:
Wash the arugula leaves, throw dry and pluck them into pieces. Wash the strawberries and cut them into slices without sepals. Quarter the onion. Then cut into thin strips. Mix the balsamic vinegar with salt and pepper and a little oil. Add salt and pepper to the fish and heat a little oil in a pan. Put in the fish medallions and fry by medium heat for about 2 minutes per side. Spread the arugula on a plate, add the strawberry slices and onion and sprinkle with the vinegar dressing. Place the fried fish next to it or on it and enjoy!
